How to choose a retail data provider in Hong Kong and Thailand
Retail data comes in four kinds. Start from the question you need answered.
Trusted by leading brands and retailers in Asia
What is a retail data provider?
A retail data provider sells information about what happens in retail: what shoppers buy, what retailers charge and promote, and what is in stock. The right kind depends on your question: sales and market share, market size and forecasts, today's shelf prices, or what competitors are promoting.
01
Four kinds of retail data
Each kind answers a different question.
02
Which question are you asking?
Match the question to the kind of data.
- 1How much did we sell, and what is our share? Retail measurement and consumer panels.
- 2How big will this category be in three years? Market research and forecasts.
- 3What does an everyday basket cost across supermarkets? Public price listings.
- 4What are competitors charging and promoting today, and do they have it in stock? Price, promotion and stock monitoring.
03
Most teams use more than one
The kinds complement each other.

Retail data FAQ
What is the difference between retail measurement and price monitoring?
Retail measurement builds sales, share and shopper behaviour from point-of-sale and panel data. Price monitoring records what retailers and marketplaces charge, promote and stock. One tells you what sold; the other tells you what was on the shelf.
Do I need more than one kind?
Many teams use more than one, because the kinds answer different questions. Start with the question you cannot answer today.
Can I track competitor prices with public data only?
For some everyday products, partly. In Hong Kong, a consumer body publishes an online price list by product category, where you can search a product, scan a barcode and set a target-price alert. It is built for shoppers, so it lists the products and retailers it chooses. To track your own SKUs at the retailers you compete with, every day, you need data collected and matched for that purpose.
How do I choose a provider?
Write down the question, the markets, how often you need the answer and who will use it. Then ask each provider which of those it covers, and ask for a sample on your own products.
How much does Checkafy cost?
Data is priced per SKU, from $1 per SKU per month. A dashboard adds 15%–30%. The pricing page has the detail.
